For centuries before the discovery of oil, pearl trading was the mainstay of the Dubai economy. Fishermen would dive off boats such as the one I have painted to pick the oysters from the seabed in the shallows of Al Kaleej.
These days it is virtually an industry of the past and no commercial pearl-fishing is worked anymore in Dubai.
This boat sat on the beach at Jumeirah, Dubai and was like a silent sentinel to times gone by.
I painted the scene in soft pastel and on Canson Mi-Tientes textured grey-brown paper approx 20" x 28". The detail on the ribbing took so long that the whole painting took me over 3 weeks to complete.
